(64) Orderville more than just work, description of 24th of July celebration, 1876
It wasn’t all work and no play. Zemira told of riding with others down the canyon for gooseberries and currants. His family attended programs and holiday celebrations such as Christmas. He described the 24th of July celebration in 1876 as follows: “The anniversary of entrance of this people into Salt Lake Valley, and general invitation having been given, a large portion of the people from the settlements above and below assembled at Orderville and spent the forenoon in speeches, songs, readings, toasts and c (etc.) Afternoon foot and horse racing, climbing greased pole, catching pig by the tail which was shaved and greased, winding up with a dance at night. A good spirit prevailed throughout.”
