(54) Zemira fond of animals
Zemira must have been fond of animals, for he talks of them frequently. He mentions hunting oxen, and finding a number of head each time, hunting ponies, and going to look for his sheep. He sold, bought, and traded horses. At one time, several days were spent doctoring his horses, which had been poisoned, and he tells of going to Panaca to get some medicine for them. He said two of them died–Tobe and Dick. He tried some To-Quap or wild tobacco on the third horse, John, which helped him. Then he had to buy horses to replace those which had died, and fenced them out of the pasture portion containing poison. He bought a pair of horses, harnesses, and a wagon for $300.
On February 11, he said he let his brother William (Palmer) have 2 yoke of oxen and a wagon on time for $405. Then a week later said he went to Rose Valley for medicine for his brother William who was very sick. Part of the winter was stormy and windy and cold, with occasional snow.
