(48) Zemira and The Civil War (1861-1865)
Considering the subject of the Civil War in eastern America, it may be noted that the Mormons basically were not actively involved in that particular conflict, being hundreds of miles removed from it. However, many cotton fields were destroyed by the soldiers trampling through them, and cotton production in the southeastern states was greatly reduced, resulting in cotton being no longer available to those in the western states. This having been the source from which the Mormon people had obtained their cotton, it was of great concern to them. This was a deciding factor in the promotion of the cotton-raising ventures in Southern Utah later on, a venture which Zemira was appointed to in ‘76.
During the years when the Civil War was being fought, Zemira moved his family from Heber to Southern Utah, being called to settle in the Upper Muddy Mission—which was then in Utah but was later claimed by Nevada. (See Map 10) He was in that area when the Black Hawk War erupted.
